Resident camp is a unique program opportunity that gives girls a powerful experience in independence, social character and outdoor exploration, all within the safe and supportive environment that is provided through Girl Scouts of Ohio's Heartland Council. Both of our resident camps, Camp Molly Lauman (Scioto County) and Camp Wakatomika (Licking County), have a rich heritage of encouraging girls to try new things, practice new skills, and make lifelong memories in the shared camp community. We want each girl to have a positive experience where she can learn more about herself and become comfortable in the outdoors.
Resident camp is a sleep-away camp that takes place during the summer. Both camps are open to all girls in grades K-12, regardless of whether or not she is a registered Girl Scout (non-Girl Scouts pay an extra fee). Girls sign up to attend individually; it is not a troop event.
Girls choose a program based on their interest and grade completed in school. Generally, all the girls in a program will share a living unit, typically consisting of platform tents or cabins, a shelter, a latrine, a hand washing station, and a fire ring. The platform tents and cabins sleep 4-6 girls each on cots and mattresses. Each unit usually has 10-24 girls with 2-4 counselors. Resident camp sessions can be from 1 1/2 to 13 days, depending upon the program and age level of the participants.
We encourage parents to work together with their campers when choosing their summer resident camp sessions. We hope you will find programs that are both age appropriate and interesting, yet challenging and fun. Resident camp is most successful when a decision is made jointly between parents/adults and the girls themselves, taking the expectations of both into careful consideration.
We know your camper will have the experience of a lifetime exploring the woods, trying new activities, and making new friends. We hope you will join us this summer as we build girls of courage, confidence, and character at camp!
