Celebrating World Thinking Day
Each year on February 22, World Thinking Day, girls join together in activities and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. This year is no exception! Plus, the World Thinking Day Award is now an official award and therefore can be worn on the front of the official uniform sash or vest!

Many service units and troops throughout Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Council are celebrating the day on its traditional date while others are hosting events in March in honor of the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts on March 12!

The theme for World Thinking Day 2012 is girls worldwide say, “We can save our planet.” This theme is based on United Nation’s Millennium Development Goal 7 focused on environmental sustainability.

Here’s what some of our service units did and plan to do!
Tri Trails Service Unit celebrated 100 Years of Girl Scouts February 23 with a decade-by-decade look back. Each troop in the unit chose a decade from Girl Scout history and designed a display to show what Girl Scouting was like in that decade.

Big Darby Service Unit hosted a “Use Our Earth Resources Wisely” event February 17, featuring presentations of the customs and foods of foreign lands. It also offered Earth Resource stations which showed how weather changes and natural disasters have affected people in various countries and how to use natural resources wisely.

The Reynoldsburg Service Unit hosted a Fashion Show with Girl Scouts centennial theme. The runway show featured modern and historical costumes and fashions from different countries.

The Rocky Fork Service Unit will host an afternoon celebration of World Thinking Day and the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts with a program on “Environmental Sustainability” at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus on March 11.

Two troops in Delaware are taking visitors on a trip around the world on March 18. Girls will be presenting fun facts, crafts, and treats from various countries. Peace Corps volunteers will also be on hand sharing their experiences of working in other countries.

These are just a few of the World Thinking Day activities; contact your local service unit for details on events going on in your neck of the woods!
Wrapped up in purpose
Jensen Warnock of Portsmouth Junior Girl Scout Troop #1190 recently earned her Girl Scout Bronze Award for work on her “2012 Special Olympics Scarf Project.”  The purpose of this project was to make and collect handmade scarves to be presented to all the athletes at the Ohio Special Olympic Winter Games. Jensen wove together her love for crocheting and her desire to help others to create a memorable Bronze Award project. Way to go Jensen!

Special Olympics provides year-round competition opportunities for the athletes at the local, area and state levels. There are about 75 local and area events and Special Olympics Ohio hosts seven statewide competitions each year.

Brownies help send out survivor support
Girls in Lewis Center Girl Scout Brownie Troop #2765 recently volunteered their time and energy to stuff and seal more than 600 envelopes containing a quarterly newsletter published by Army Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) Program.  The newsletters were mailed to Ohio Gold Star Families -- families who have lost soldiers in service and support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation New Dawn. Scott Creed, SOS Support Coordinator, praised the girls and Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland at large for the “great work you do for the community and establishing values for our future community leaders.”

Daisy wows President with cookie business skills
Girl Scout Daisy Rebeca Forsyth recently proved she has what it takes to win over The Ohio State University’s highest ranking official with her Girl Scout business skills! Rebeca, who is a member of Pickerington Girl Scout Daisy Troop #2568, sold university President E. Gordon Gee six boxes of Girl Scout Cookies during a visit to his office in January.

Rebeca’s older sister, Christina Forsyth, who co-leads the troop and is also a junior at the university, e-mailed Gee to see if he was interested in buying Girl Scout Cookies from her sister. He returned the e-mail saying, he would be “delighted” to purchase some of the eight varieties of Girl Scouts cookies being offered this year. Rebeca’s cookie selling skills didn’t end there, however.

She also sold two boxes to Gee’s Director of Scheduling and Special Projects, Michelle Compston.

Book drive adds chapter on giving
Six Girl Scout troops at Gahanna Lincoln Elementary used their creativity to create reading opportunities for children! Each troop participated in the second annual “Be Mine” Book Drive in February.  The troops designed signs, performed skits on their Lincoln Live morning announcement program, and asked teachers, staff, and fellow students to collect at least 2,000 books for Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the YWCA Family Center.

“The girls set a big goal for themselves and I am excited to say that they hit and surpassed their goal with a total of 2,812 books collected,” said School Coordinator Honey Whalen. “I am so proud of our Girl Scout family at Lincoln.  The books collected will be going to these two local programs that provide books for children who do not have access to books at home.”

The six participating troops included Troops: #970, #651, #1273, #2410, #50125 and #2597.
